Covenant Presbyterian Church Leadership & Staff

If you are looking for a church home, please consider Covenant Presbyterian Church. Here you will find a wealth of teaching, warm fellowship, and opportunities to grow in your Christian walk. To learn more about us, please talk to Pastor John or one of the elders.

Dr. John F. Evans, Teaching Elder and Pastor

John Evans 300

Dr. John F. Evans was called as the church pastor in 2016 while serving on the mission field in Kenya. He joined us in September 2017.

Born in North Carolina, Pastor John grew up in Indiana as the son and grandson of ministers. At the age of 18, while attending a boarding school, he gave his heart to the Lord Jesus. In the years following, he got married, began seminary, and spent six years of pastoral ministry in the USA. Life took a major turn in 1997 as he became a missionary to Africa, helping the Church with leadership training. Initially John moved to Zambia and joined the faculty of the Theological College of Central Africa. There he served as lecturer (1997–2007), Registrar (1998–2001), and Academic Dean (2001–2007). Leaving Zambia in 2008, he was a visiting lecturer at Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary.

Rounding out his missionary career, John moved to Kenya in 2009, where he taught for eight years in the Biblical Studies Department at Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology, eventually heading that department. He is a graduate of The Stony Brook School in New York; Calvin College (BA); Covenant Theological Seminary (MDiv and ThM); and University of Stellenbosch (DTh), with post-doctoral studies in Cambridge, England. He has authored two books: A Guide to Biblical Commentaries & Reference Works (Zondervan, 2016), and what he jokes is a “hopelessly arcane” study of Ezekiel’s recognition formulas (Eisenbrauns, 2019).

There are three children in his family, and he adores his two precious little grandsons. Pastor John says he feels “very honored indeed” to serve Covenant Presbyterian Church. He adds, “I aim to put God first and closely follow Jesus my Savior. For a preacher like me, that especially means loving the church, and being faithful to God’s word — all out of gratitude for God’s grace in my own life.” His life ministry verse is 2 Corinthians 4:5: “We do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.”

Don't let his degrees frighten you off. He is really down to earth and approachable! We are blessed to have a pastor with this level of academic achievement. Come hear him preach and teach and you will appreciate it too.

Covenant Presbyterian Church is governed by a session of ruling elders, who meet with the pastor in overseeing and maintaining the spiritual government of the church , along with the board of deacons, who manage our facilities, financial operations and minister to those who are in need.

Jan English, Office Manager

Please welcome Jan English as our new Office Manager for 2019.

Jan was born and raised in Mississippi, where she was baptized in the Baptist Church. As a USAF daughter and wife, she travelled the world and remained active in base chapels all along the way. During those years, she served on chapel boards, Protestant Women of the Chapel board, taught Sunday School and VBS while raising her children, Austin, Candace, Taylor and Evan. She now has 5 grandchildren and hopes for more.

Jan came to Covenant Presbyterian Church in 2014 from Desert Springs Presbyterian in Tucson, AZ, where she joined the PCA.

June Ruyle, Organist

June Ruyle came to Covenant in October 2012. She has a background of playing church organs most of her life. June especially loves the hymns and gospel songs used in the evangelical churches where she has played. Ten years previous to Covenant she was the organist for a Lutheran church and still enjoys using Advent, Lent, and Easter hymns seasonally.

Along with music June has dedicated much of her time to church librarianship. She served a Lutheran day school as librarian and board member for seven years before moving to Arizona. She is an avid advocate for utilizing small group Bible studies as a way to reach neighbors and introduce them to the Good News. In these groups the Bible is openly discussed and leaders are trained to include those who appear to have questions, which oftentimes sparks further discussion.
